Mikhail Petrenko

Mikhail Petrenko was born in Leningrad. He graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg Conservatory. While still a student, he débuted at the Mariinsky Theatre in Prokofiev’s opera “Semyon Kotko” and in 1998 became a soloist with the opera troupe.

He is a prize winner in the international competitions named for Maria Callas, Rimsky-Korsakov, Plàcido Domingo and Elena Obraztsova.

Mikhail Petrenko’s international début was at the Berlin State Opera in the role of Hunding in “Die Walküre” with Daniel Barenboim conducting. Since then the singer has appeared at the Opéra national de Paris, the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, the Bavarian State Opera, and the Royal Opera Convent Garden as well as at the Salzburg Festival, the Aix-en-Provence Festival, and the BBC Proms. He has worked in collaboration with such conductors as Sir Simon Rattle, Pierre Boulez, Christoph Eschenbach, Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel and many more.

Petrenko’s repertoire of bass roles covers the operas of Glinka, Borodin, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Prokofiev, Wagner, Mozart, Verdi, Gounod and many more.

In November 2011 he sang the title role in “Ruslan and Lyudmila” for the reopening of the historic stage of the Bolshoi Theatre.
