Andrei Popov

Andrei Popov was born in Leningrad. He graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg Conservatory studying under Lev Morozov. From 2000 to 2007 he was a soloist for the Mariinsky Theatre Academy of Young Opera Singers. Since 2007 he has been a Mariinsky Theatre soloist and a guest soloist for the Bolshoi Theatre. He has received the Golden Mask award and was nominated for a Grammy.

In addition to the classic tenor parts, Andrei Popov has at his command such roles as Alexei in “The Gambler”, the District Inspector in “The Nose”, Truffaldino in “The Love for Three Oranges”, Selifan in “Dead Souls”, the Prince in “The Enchanted Wanderer”, Nero in “The Mystery of Apostle Paul”, Vyrin in “The Station Master”, the Devil in “The Brothers Karamazov”, Khristophor Burdyukov in “The Lawsuit”, Grigory Storchenko in “Shponka and His Aunt”, and the Hunchback in “Die Frau ohne Schatten”.

He has appeared in productions with such conductors as Mikhail Pletnev (“May Night”, Arkhangelskoye, 2008), Vladimir Ashkenazy (“Katschei the Immortal”, Japan, 2008), and Gennady Rozhdestvensky (“Boris Godunov”, Opéra de Nice, 2011); and with such directors as William Kentridge (“The Nose”, Metropolitan Opera, 2010, 2013 and Aix-en-Provence, 2011) and Peter Stein (“The Nose”, Rome Opera House, 2013).

He was the first to perform the title role in Rodion Schedrin’s “The Lefthander” at its world premiere in 2013 at the Mariinsky Theatre.
